I believe it just culture not religiosity things at all. Islam do not order us with specific type of clothes, Islam just put some conditions to clothes to be respectful and not sexually attractive. It part of Islamic integrated rules to keep community healthy and safe.

I think that the culture affected the samples of clothing. Because in Egypt the way of clothing/dress differed from period to another, The way of dress in the sixties much different from now, but I agree with the previous comment that Islam do not order us with specific type of clothes, but just put some conditions to clothes to be respectful and not sexually attractive.
I will speak about Islam only because i don't know what about other religions, ISLAM DETERMINE what men have to cover in their bodies (between navel to knee)any way ,the important thing that they cover this place by wearing any thing as they want.FINALLY there isn't any significance to the men's robes in Islam
